Health & Safety for Operatives

Introduction

The construction industry accounts for more than a quarter of all work-related deaths and over 4,000 major injuries every year. For this reason health and safety continues to be at the forefront of the industry's agenda and is central to the drive to qualify the construction workforce.

Course objectives/key benefits

To provide those attending the course with the relevant knowledge and understanding that will enable them to carry their duties safely and in line with the relevant health and safety requirements within their respective organisations/workplaces. This includes;

• Raising general awareness of health and safety legislation
• Gaining an understanding of the role of Risk Assessments/Method Statements (RAMS)
• Raises the general awareness of 'on-site' safety
• Improves health and safety awareness across the industry
• Helps to ensure employers have a competent and safe labour force

Who is the course aimed at?

Anyone working within a construction-related industry, such as builders, plumbers, electricians and heating engineers

PLEASE NOTE: SWAAT also offer a health and safety course for managers and supervisors.

Entry requirements/pre-requisites

There are no entry or pre-requisite requirements to undertaking this course.

Course content:

• Requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
• Requirements of other relevant Regulations, such as the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)
• Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance with specific relevance to construction work
• Health and Safety methodology
• Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
• Health and Safety auditing

Assessment

Although there is no formal assessment a question paper related to general health and safety is given to each candidate to complete at the end of the course.

Course Outcome/Qualification

SWAAT Certificate in the Health and Safety within the workplace
