South West Assessment and Training has devised a training package to cover the requirements of domestic installation
and at the end of the course students will have a sufficient level of competence, so that once registered with a relevant body, they will
be able to work safely, efficiently and legally on electrical equipment. With the introduction to a change in the building regulations, most
electrical work carried out in houses must, by law, be notified to the local authority building control. The exception to this is where the
work is undertaken by a competent person who is a member of a Governing Body and is registered onto a Part P scheme.
A competent person is someone who is approved by one of the governing bodies approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister, known as the Part P scheme. The scheme does require that any members can prove competency and, upon registering onto a scheme,
candidates will be assessed by the Governing Body they choose. To register onto a Part P scheme candidates are required to have knowledge of domestic
installation and a relevant qualification which determines that they are competent and able to safely work on electrical equipment in the home. Persons
registered with the Part P Self-Certification schemes will be qualified contractors with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety. They are
required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulations requirements when the work has been completed.
In order for candidates to reach their full potential and fully meet the requirements of the Part P scheme, practical abilities will
be required to be updated and an understanding of terminology and basic electrical theory. Even without an electrical background or with limited
electrical knowledge, candidates will be provided with the required training to bring them up to speed.

Candidates should have a knowledge and understanding of domestic electrical installations. For anyone new to electrical work, or who would
like to update their knowledge and skills, it is highly recommended that they undertake the Basic Electrics course prior
to this course.
